Interdependence

Like a beautiful spider's web on a dewy morning, there is a kind of order in the universe, in the movement of the stars and the turning of the earth and the changing of the seasons, and even in the cycle of human life. I like to think of it all as one big dance, and whatever moves I make I can expect to be reciprocated in one way or another. The relation of the individual to the totality of existence is more intimate than that of the part to the whole. The individual is the whole. In our recognition of our interdependence with others and the world around us, we are compelled to feel a sense of responsibility for our thoughts and actions.

We all seek happiness and an end to suffering so if we can begin to truly recognize the oneness of all humankind, our motivation to find lasting happiness and peace will grow stronger. The oneness of humanity, founded on compassion, understanding and respect, is a realistic and viable basis for our conduct. It may seem a long way off, but the tide is set to change and those of us already awakened to the wonderful truth of interdependence will find ourselves one step ahead on the path to reconciliation and leading the way towards finding out the truth about our existence.

The Band

When a group of musicians find themselves living together in an old chocolate factory, it's perhaps inevitable that they would combine their talents to create sweet music. But in this instance, the gentlemen involved appear to have notes running through their veins; living and breathing music like I've never seen.

Despite all doing their own thing in different bands it seemed a fine idea to get together and rehearse for gigs that would make them some money, at a time when creatives are having a tough time. For their first rehearsal each person chose two of their songs for the band to improvise to, et voila! They had eight extraordinary songs. Between them the instruments they play include guitar, organ, trombone, double bass, fiddle, saxophone, piano, mandolin, accordian and percussion. They're planning to get two more players to complete the group: a wizard jazz percussionist and a trumpet player. There are also plans for a barber shop quartet... Watch this space!

I have found myself in total awe of Autumn this year, as I've wandered through woodland feeling the leaves beneath my feet, looking upwards at the rainbow of colours, watching as leaves dance gently to the ground, and soaking up that earthy scent of mushrooms abounding. It is a time for foraging and enjoying nature's treasures, as well as marking a change in pace from the busy summer to one of calm reflection.

Traditionally Autumn is seen to represent adulthood, as we ripen to maturity and then prepare ourselves for retirement in the winter months. It reflects a period of change more than any other season. Although Autumn tends to be associated with melancholy in poetry , I sense a time of fulfillment, wisdom and freedom that brings the harvest of a lifetime of learning.

There is something about this time of year that compels me to turn inward and take stock of the year gone by. It also encourages me to immerse myself in nature because there is so much to observe, from the migrating birds to the sprouting mushrooms to the ever-changing leaves.

The seasons provide a wonderful opportunity to harmonize with nature as we soak up our environment and get in tune with what is happening around us. By listening to that instinctual urge within us that calls for us to withdraw and hibernate in Autumn and through the Winter, we allow our mind to realign itself and become calm in preparation for new beginnings and the busyness that comes with Spring.

The Agitator was back to ruffling some feathers at Soapbox last week - encouraging us to stamp on our bills and speak out against the powers that be. I always enjoy Derek's performances, but the Evaristo Club provides the perfect setting for him to speak directly to his audience and mobilise them into thinking about what he sings so passionately about. With the perfect percussion accompaniment from Rob, ensuring a marching and heart-pumping beat, I was left feeling ready for action!

The Holy Vessels

For their debut performance, The Holy Vessels, composed of five friends and musicians from Brighton, gave a soulful set at Soho's Evaristo Club. Down in the dark, sweaty basement their sweet melodies felt uplifting and pure, and I found my feet incessantly stomping to their rhythmic lines. I'll be looking out for these lovely gents in the future.

Pumpkin Heads

Knowing that I was going to be missing out on the Halloween celebrations I got started early on the pumpkins this year. It all began as an innocent desire to make pumpkin pie, but I ended up making fritters, muffins, soup, curry... All turned out to be deliciously delightful!

It was on a jaunt to visit a friend in the mystical Thetford Forest near Norfolk that I finally got round to carving some faces on these magnificant vegetables. Armed with a fine collection of knives and scalpels, Luke and I got slightly carried away with the pumpkin facial surgery and ended up carving three ridiculous faces on one. With candles inside, it created the most beautiful shimmering patterns around the room and with the fruit of our labour, I made a warming Thai inspired coconut broth.

Portico Quartet - 'Isla'

As far as album releases go, I don't think I've ever waited with such anticipation! Although I've heard the tracks from 'Isla' played live at recent gigs, knowing the hard work and thought that has gone in to its production and with the Real World team behind it, I knew I would be in for a suprise. And a marvelous one at that!

Portico Quartet have such a rare quality in their music; it is hard to describe in words. Listening through 'Isla' you are taken on a sonic journey through time and space to ethereal heights, where sounds resonate within and beyond you. In tracks such as 'Line' and 'Isla' I find myself interpreting the sounds as those from nature, the universe, or my inner being. Those sounds that aren't easily expressed but that make sense and encourage you to look at things differently.

I was interested to see what Portico Quartet would do with their second album after the ingenuity and success of 'Knee Deep in the North Sea', and I am so gratified with the result. With each listen I find myself hearing more as the album unfolds, and the well thought-out track order, piano interlude and final improvisation lend perfectly to the album's progression.

Smokey Angle Shades

The first time I heard of Smokey Angle Shades was back in April, and I remember feeling curious and intrigued by their name. It wasn't until I found out they would be playing on this year's Rat Pack Tour that I had the opportunity to see them at a warm-up gig in Camden, and I felt instantly drawn to them as they took to the stage - with their penchant for elaborate headgear and wild country n' western vibe!

I found myself stomping away with the rest of the crowd to their melodic and catchy songs. Their sound is definitely unique but there are nods to early Beatles records, 60's California, rhythm and blues, and perhaps a dash of a Nashville hoedown! Their beautiful harmonies and rolling rhythms, combined with the obvious musical talent of the five members, make Smokey Angle Shades a very exciting band to watch, and I hope to see much more from them in the future.

Mind Waves

A few minutes spent playing around with my camera in the garden led to these images, which have since made me ponder about the nature of our thoughts, and how they influence the world around us and our perception of it. I have always felt that when I am in a positive mood, people I encounter and things around me reflect my positive state; as though I attract what I feel. During unhappy spells, it has felt the opposite: like the world is against me and everyone in it is miserable.

Our minds have come to be "deluded" as a result of years of conditioning and experience, which have encouraged fear, hatred, craving and selfishness to become the 'normal' state of mind. But these negative emotions and thoughts have no valid foundation and work against our natural instinct and the oneness of humanity.

Everyday life had become laden with anxieties, regrets, doubt and paranoia due to the overwhelming pressures of consumerist culture and the political climate, which constantly work towards ridding us of our individuality, our liberties and our feeling of self-worth. The result is a constant want for something more; something better, bigger and more expensive, and a worrying cycle of self-destruction on an internal and external level. All these negative influences that constantly surround us have inevitably led to a increasing trend in negative mind patterns, manifesting themselves in forms of depression and anxiety.

By cultivating positive thoughts and emotions we can begin to change the basic perspectives on which our feelings depend, so that we can gradually reorient the way we perceive ourselves and others. If we become mindful of our thoughts, noting our emotional reactions to them, then it will become obvious what makes us feel good and happy. Using this knowledge, we can encourage and call upon these thoughts at times when we need relief from feelings of anger, impatience, lust, hatred and so on.

'Our positive states of mind can act as antidotes to our negative tendencies... So that as you enhance the capacity of these antidotal factors, the greater their force, the more you will be able to reduce the force of the mental and emotional afflictions.' (The Dalai Lama)

By making a conscious effort at first, we can be mindful of our thoughts, our perceptions, our speech and our actions so that those around us experience the positive energy created from positive thoughts. Developing a warm heart ourselves can also help transform others, encouraging them to become more compassionate and harmonious with the world around them. A sense of community and a positive atmosphere will then develop based on mutual trust, respect, love and kindness. By sharing one another's suffering and working towards eradicating hatred and anger from our minds, a profound change can begin; leading to inner and outward peace, and lasting happiness.

I love coming across old undeveloped films, which bear no marking of their content. I recently found some medium format slide film, taken with my beloved Holga, and send it off to be processed. I'd totally forgotten about this day spent nearly five years ago walking on the beach north of Bootle when I was at university in Liverpool. It was the most beautiful sunny day, but blisteringly cold. Both these images are double-exposed so if you look closely you can see a second image looking almost ghostly. I love how the colours have come out, and that it looks like we were walking on Mars rather than a northern English coastline!

When my sister told me about her latest idea to cast herself in a wax dress for a live installation at Frieze Art Fair I jumped at the chance to witness it come together and help her set it up. Taking place in a beautiful mansion in Mayfair, Kirstie climbed into a pre-cast flowing red dress, and calmly stood while molten wax was delicately poured over her exposed skin. She then stood motionless for three hours whilst the public passed her by gasping at the human sculpture.

'Aaaaaahhh' - my final sigh as I opened the post this morning to find my very own copy of the debut album from Mumford & Sons. Combining sweepingly majestic songs with hoedowning euphoric bluegrass I've been lifted into the sweetest of moods! The immense production on the album transforms their slightly more raw stage sound to momentous heights, so I suggest getting yourself a copy of 'Sigh No More' and then tracking them down on their next tour to get the best of both!

Wall Yoga

After finding myself locked out my house at 3am with nothing but the clothes I was wearing to keep me warm, I decided the best way to get the blood pumping would be to attempt some yoga on my garden wall lining the Thames. Thus, there was no room for errors as a slip of the foot would have swept me in to the murky waters below.

Using a slow exposure I was able to capture two positions in each photograph, but the distinction is somewhat unclear so that it looks like I'm far bendier than I actually am!

River Rat Pack Tour - Day 1

As the Summer breathed its final sigh a troop of Londoners prepared themselves for a week on board three barges; brought together by a love for music and the good life! Armed with a bountiful supply of whiskey I made my way to the pick-up point and met the fine young gentlemen that would be my companions for the week. Once on board everyone came together like one big happy family as the days were spent cruising gently down the river, passing beautiful villages and countryside, and by night we would take over sleepy towns to perform free gigs. On board this year were Riff Raff, Cheka, Beans on Toast, Six Nation State, Smokey Angle Shades, Wild Wolves, Ciara Hadar and Nat Jenkins. They provided endless doses of soulful music, both at the venues and snuggled up on deck in the wee hours. It was an inspirational week to be a part of, and I finally invented a drink I feel proud to put my name to. So to get an inkling of life on board, find yourself a quiet spot by a river, a musical friend with an instrument and lovingly brew up the following ingredients on a camping stove and enjoy being soothed all over by a Mama Blues:

Fine Day for a Wedding

There's nothing I enjoy more than a summer's wedding when you get to witness two people celebrating their love, surrounded by friends and family and there's always a marvelous array of hats to admire! My dear friend Simon was usher for his sister Hannah and her beau Toby on their special day, and they asked me to take some photos of the occasion. It was a beautiful ceremony and the reception was lavishly catered with delicious food, fine wine and ale, and it was the elders that put us youngsters to shame on the dance floor, with granny Taylor hot-stepping way past midnight!

Yorkshire Dales

I thought it would be a good idea to break up my journey home by stopping off somwehere for a night, and looking at the map I was instantly drawn to Yorkshire and it's wild Dales. After many a wet night I decided to go on a mission to find a dry spot to sleep in and lo and behold I found an old barn nestled between sprawling hills and without any sight of civilasation nearby. It instantly became home and I found myself making a mini-workshop to create keepsakes from all the feathers, wood, shells and stones I'd collected on my journey. I got so lost in the process that I was up til sunrise working at my table with a headtorch to guide me, and by the following day I was certain I wasn't ready to leave so spent another dreamy night sampling whiskeys I'd brought in Scotland and continuing to beaver away in my workshop.

It was during my final mediation of the trip that I awakened to another important truth about our misinterpretation of reality, which was perhaps the most valuable lesson of my journey. When contemplating happiness and suffering I kept coming back to this idea of opposites - be it beauty and ugliness, dark and light, joy and pain - and tried to reconcile this accepted view of negative and positive with the feeling of oneness I had experienced. It was Parmenides, whom in the sixth century BC classified the world into positives and negatives, that begun the greatest delusion that continues to blind us from seeing Reality as it it really is. By separating thoughts into good and bad, distinguishing ourselves from others and understanding the world through the notion of duality, we have prevented our mental development and have thus become ignorant to the unity of life in all its forms. By taking time to contemplate this notion of non-duality and experiencing it for yourself, the barriers to enlightenment will gradually fall away and there is hope that we will begin to treat others, animals and nature as we wish to be treated ourselves. And then we might start to witness real progress in this world.

From Northumberland I made my way to the Scottish coast for some long beach walks and woodland explorations. In the magical Doach Wood I ended up taking 5 hours over a one mile route, verging off into the dense forest searching for fungi and other edible delights, until I made it to the viewpoint where I lay in the heather and watched the amber sun spray its golden light over the valleys and treetops beneath me. That night I did some extensive mushroom study, managed to communicate with a herd of bulls, and prepared a meal of all the things I'd foraged, making nettle soup, blackberry compote and rose hip tea. It must have taken three hours to prepare and although not the most tasty of meals it was one the most satisfying.

After a slightly troubling experience the night I left Northumberland I found myself having the only negative thoughts of my trip on this part of the journey and this made me ponder long and hard about the nature of happiness and suffering. Our lives are ultimately driven towards finding happiness, but due to the impermanence of all conditioned things we always find ourselves striving to maintain that happy feeling in vein.

If we step outside our complex matrix of thoughts, feelings and emotions and observe them we start to realise that they are simply our interpretation of events and are ultimately impermanent, unsatisfactory and non-self. What we have come to believe is our brain reacting to external stimuli is in fact just hundreds of years of conditioning and indoctrination that has clouded the still and peaceful mind that lies within. By practicing mindfulness and observing our thoughts, BUT NOT REACTING TO THEM, we can begin to see the Original Mind in all its beautiful tranquility. Beginning to understand this somewhat overwhelming truth has made me realise that craving happiness or trying to rid ourselves of suffering is fruitless, when what we need to do is search within ourselves to find lasting contentment. Thoughts will come and go, but if we focus our energies on maintaining a balanced mind through constant awareness and acceptance of all that is, then we can begin to find peace.

After a wonderful few days spent in the Lakes I decided to continue my journey to pastures new and so I cruised some country roads to the mighty Hadrian's Wall before venturing to Hexham and beyond, to some beautiful villages nestled between streams and woodlands.

I spent the night in a secluded forest with a river flowing by, made a roaring fire and cooked up a fine mushroom risotto before embarking on a lengthy meditation. It led to one of those moments where you experience total mental clarity by fulfilling that inner purpose of awakening your mind to the present moment and seeing life for what it really is. When I opened my eyes to see the four elements of earth, wood, fire and water merging into one mirage-like vision I felt at one with existence and my mind was totally at peace. It was an enlightening and memorable experience that was only made possible by immersing myself in the nature around me, and something I intend to do as often as possible!

The following day I explored some local villages including the charming Juniper, before coming across the beautifully tranquil Garden Station in Langley where I enjoyed a fine afternoon tea and stroll around their gardens. Next stop was the Langely Sawmill where I spent some time talking wood and saws with the lovely owner who showed me around and shared his brew with me as we sat on one of his exquisite hand-carved benches.

The Lake District

Somewhere out of the blue (or perhaps it was always part of my blueprint...), I decided to go on a camping adventure to the Lakes. With my tent, stove and an adequate supply of whiskey, I set off to beautiful Buttermere where I pitched up next to a flowing stream. I spent my days hiking, swimming, meditating, practicing tai chi and yoga on mountain tops, and my nights feasting like a queen and reading in my nylon home.

Whilst searching for new spots to pitch my tent each day I was constantly aware of the pure beauty of my environment and the peacefulness or nature. I realised the importance of enjoying this beauty but not to desire its exclusive possession for myself. Like all things in life, it's important not to indulge in either pleasure or pain, to cling to good or bad, happiness or sorrow; because it this wanting and attachment that leads to suffering. Knowing that the only constant in life is that everything changes, we can free ourselves from desire and enjoy the present moment without craving for it to last longer.

When my sisters and I were wee lasses, we used to spend summer afternoons mixing up homemade perfume from rose petals in the garden. I can still remember the sweet, musty scent of our concoctions. On a beautiful sunny day at the Hanson house, spent golfing, laughing and indulging, I enjoyed some time with the cherub-like trio of sisters Erin, Ada and Amelie and decided to pass on the Macleod rose-perfume secret. We made a few adjustments in the recipe and made one batch into a love potion, with all of our kisses blown in before the fermentation process began!

I love spending time with children, because they encourage you to revert back to the clear mental state of childhood; unclouded by judgement, experience and expectation; just being present, and not worrying about the past or the future. Children are remarkable for their intelligence and ardour, for their curiosity, and for the clarity and ruthlessness of their vision. We can learn a lot from spending time with them and must recognise the valuable lessons that can be learnt by following their example.

English Country Garden

Being back in t'country to tend to my parents' chickens, I have been spending my days wandering the garden, taking time to appreciate each leaf, petal, scent, sound and it has been an absolute joy! I have been taking photos of flowers in an attempt to capture their transient beauty; but nothing compares to holding it up close, with the light shining through and inspecting each vein, component and colour. I've also taken to flower arranging - a wonderfully creative and meditative exercise!

A few months ago I began a personal project examining the notion of Self and the ego. Although it started as a means to practice photography and lighting techniques, the process of self observation and inquiry proved to be intruiging and absorbing.

In the Tao Te Ching Lao Tzu wrote that "Knowing others is wisdom. Knowing the self is Enlightenment." This self-knowledge requires a great deal of strength because the experience of the Self is always a defeat for the ego - associated with the mind and the sense of time, which compulsively thinks in order to be assured of its future existence, rather than simply knowing its own self and the present.

My ego is filled with desires, cravings and delusions which manifest in strange ways and encourage certain characteristics or behavioural patterns to emerge which form different parts of my personality. Althought this is often unconscious, I have begun the struggle of observing my mind and acting mindfully so that I am gradually becoming aware of when my ego is fighting for attention. This series of photographs is an attempt to capture some of the characteristics of my ego, to acknowledge them and to accept them.

I thought returning to London after a month in the countryside would be difficult, but my pain was eased by the sweet, melodic sounds of Portico Quartet, who last night performed a secret gig at the wonderful Vortex Jazz Bar in Dalston. It was the last of their live performances for the summer as the boys take a well-earned break after the recording of their second album, set for release in October. As ever, they took me on a sonic journey to faraway places and I enjoyed every minute of it!

In return for some press shots I took recently of Raissa from The Mummers, I was offered a ticket to Latitude last weekend. It was the perfect way to continue my time in the countryside and expand the mind; the site being nestled around a lake and surrounded by mystical woodland and the festival offered everything from film to poetry to cabaret to dance classes. The highlights were my Friday morning Lindy Hop class, the preview of 'Le Donk' by Shane Meadows followed by a Q & A, and Mark Lamarr's God's Jukebox session. There was memorable music from Regina Spektor, Asteriod Galaxy Tour, The Flirtations, Lyrebirds, Thom Yorke and it was great to finally catch The Mummers play live.

Needing an escape from the big city and some time for reflection and tranquility, I made my way to a quiet hilltop near Totnes in Devon for a week's retreat at The Barn. Days were spent meditating, gardening, cooking, reading, walking and practicing yoga, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and all sorts of wild animals. It felt like a realised utopia that has left me serene and energised. Whilst there, we were guided in meditation and learning by Shenyen, a Tibetan monk from Liverpool, who inspired me to read books from The Barn's library late into the night. I came across a poem by Blake that I hadn't read since school and it took on a whole new meaning. It's perfect in its simplicity and its message:

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

Last weekend I made my way down t'country for a weekend at the Bliss's farm - transformed for 3 days into a magical haven of all things smiling and delicious! Great music from Mumford & Sons, Rebel Control, Barefoot Confessor and the brilliantly reformed Six Nation State. And I particularly enjoyed my jaunts to the secret hedge where I took part in some serious stomping amongst the lasers and between balloons. All in all, a wonderful weekend and the perfect way to start the festival season.

The magnificant One Taste Collective are hosting a free day of music in Hyde Park this Sunday, which means picnics, pimms and sonic treats for the ears.

I first stumbled across this talented bunch of musicians as the sun was rising on the final morning of The Big Chill last year. I was drawn towards their inspiring sounds from afar, and spent the next two hours dancing uncontrollably as some 20 people took to the stage with percussion instruments. Individually and en mass this force knows how to bring people together and feed the soul through music.

I have been thinking a lot lately about going on some adventures overseas, since it feels a long time ago that I trod on fresh soil. For the past year I had a strong urge to return to Africa and explore Ethiopia and some of the eastern coast, but now my instinct is leading me back to Asia. If all goes to plan I'll be off next year, starting in Northern India. It was my love for Cambodia that started my fascination with the Asian continent, so I've rooted out some pictures from the vault of some of my travels there between 2004 and 2006.

Last weekend I made it home as the sun was rising and the Thames floated by peacefully sleeping, made some tea, and got myself geared up for a a journey to the seaside. It was a beautiful day in Brighton, which set the scene for a musical and visual extravaganza amongst the alleyways of Kemp Town. The main stage was brimming with local talent, including the uplifting melodies and skanking basslines of the almighty Resonators, and the hugely entertaining Justice Force 5. It was the perfect way to see in the beginning of Summer surrounded by smiling faces glistening in glitter!

River Rat Pack

It was a year ago this week that I drove a carload of hungover boys and battered instruments to a dockyard in Oxford, where a beautiful barge awaited to begin the River Rat Pack tour. There I was acquainted with a fine group of fellows who would become my trusty steads for the week ahead as we cruised down the river, stopping off at sleepy towns to inject some musical mayhem into their otherwise quiet village life. The days and nights merged into a marathon of adventures, jam sessions, serenades and hoe-downs which I was honored to be part of.

On board last year were: Beans on Toast, Mumford and Sons, Josh Weller, Nat Jenkins, Derek Meins, Six Nation State, Naked and the Boys, with appearances along the way from The Golden Silvers and Jay Jay Pistolet.

The good news is that the River Rat Pack is returning this year - due to set sail on September 1st and we have another superb line-up of new talent, including Smokey Angle Shades and Wild Wolves. I for one, cannot wait.

The lovely people at The Other Side magazine celebrated the launch of their festival edition at The Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes last night. Great music from The Peeps, Citadels and The Molotovs and the magnificant Disco Shed Djs. I had hoped to win some festival tickets in the raffle, but it wasn't to be.

When midnight struck I hotfooted it to Soho to catch Cheka play at Troy Bar. I took to the tables for some sweaty swinging and stomping before making the long journey back to Greenwich. By the time I got home the sun was rising and the birds tweeting so I sat in my garden with a cup of camomile and watched the river calmly pass me by. The best things in life are certainly free!

We had a magnificant team of creatives behind the scenes, who designed surreal and twisted sets inside the beautiful Elizabeth Fry Refuge on Mare Street, which is soon to be demolished. The wonderful new venue The Flowerpot put on a blinding night yesterday with Mumford & Sons performing songs from their recently finished album. It's always a treat to hear their new material but I still can't get enough of their past releases. Last night's hightlights for me were 'Sister' and 'The Banjolin Song', with their beautiful harmonies driven by Marcus's spine-tingling vocals. It's all about that banjolin! Innit.

I love this time of year... There is nothing better than waking up to the sound of the birds tweeting in the trees outside as they wait for their mate and the intoxicating smell of flowers coming into bloom. When the sun shines brightly between the patches of cloud and rain, the earth's creations seem all the more beautiful.

When I was in t'country, I couldn't resist venturing to some woodland to search for bluebells. When I finally stumbled across a sea of violet flowers lit up in patches from the sun's rays I sighed a deep sigh of contentment. There's nothing more invigorating than nature.

After a recent trip to see the Kuniyoshi exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art (one of the most mesmerising collections of art I have ever seen), I was inspired to take along some Japanese props for an little shoot.

I was fortunte enough to be put in contact with Mr Iain Woods with a view to take some pictures for him. Although he had sent me a demo of some tracks he made for his degree show in Fine Art ad Sculpture, nothing prepared me for his harrowing performance at a gallery opening in Battersea. His voice sent shivers down my spine, but then the heavy bassline had me stomping like the good ole days at Fabric! His on-stage antics wowed the crowd and his penchant for jumpsuits makes me love him even more!

Alone on the bus

I've always been terrified of the idea of 'the commute'. Any job I take on must fall outside or inbetween the 9-5 day so that I can avoid what is surely the most miserable and dishearting time to travel. The faces of those suited and booted on the tube at 8am is enough to bring me down for the whole day. At least on a bus you can look at the surroundings, and it is definitely my preferred mode of public transport. Whilst waiting at the bus stop I always find it fascinating looking at those on board, as they gaze in to the distance or busy themselves with their blackberry or the daily paper.

I have found some comfort in taking pictures of people on rush-hour buses because although isolated and seemingly alone in their thoughts, there is a sense of belonging in these pictures. A suggestion that we all suffer the same routines and anxieties. But we all need to look up once and while, start a conversation with the person sitting next to us, and perhaps we can share our loneliness with someone else.

Sent on to the streets to take portraits of the British public, I ventured to Covent Garden armed with my camera and searched for people with hats. This was harder then it sounds - people's mistrust of cameras in the modern age combined with either shyness or vainty, meant I only managed 22 in 60 minutes. Of which only ONE was British and two female. It confirmed my suspicions that we Brits are far too reserved, need to smile more, and perhaps saw "yes" once in a while...
