Alone on the bus

I've always been terrified of the idea of 'the commute'. Any job I take on must fall outside or inbetween the 9-5 day so that I can avoid what is surely the most miserable and dishearting time to travel. The faces of those suited and booted on the tube at 8am is enough to bring me down for the whole day. At least on a bus you can look at the surroundings, and it is definitely my preferred mode of public transport. Whilst waiting at the bus stop I always find it fascinating looking at those on board, as they gaze in to the distance or busy themselves with their blackberry or the daily paper.

I have found some comfort in taking pictures of people on rush-hour buses because although isolated and seemingly alone in their thoughts, there is a sense of belonging in these pictures. A suggestion that we all suffer the same routines and anxieties. But we all need to look up once and while, start a conversation with the person sitting next to us, and perhaps we can share our loneliness with someone else.

Soapbox

Soapbox is a monthly night organised by a most wonderful gentleman, Derek Meins. It takes place in a small basement in Soho and has played host to some truly talented musicians and wordsmen, who take to the wooden box and make a racket using whatever instruments come to hand - all played acoustically and with Al Capone watching over...

For Little Maddie's special day, I made her a picnic to enjoy whilst taking in my magical garden view, before we enjoyed her delicious pink meringues!

Home Sweet Home

My latest assignment for my reportage course was titled 'Home'. I've been lucky enough to have parents that lived abroad from when I was born (in Barbados, jah rastafari!) until recently, so I've always made home wherever I may be at that time. Having recently moved to Greenwich with three delightful compadres: Josh, Joel and Fanny, I've been capturing them on camera to document the latest place I call 'home'.

Stephen Jones Hat Anthology

I love hats. All styles, materials, eras - I just can't get enough of them. So when I heard about 'Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones' opening at the V & A, I put on one of my finest and spent a long afternnon drooling over all sorts of headgear from skull caps to bonnets to bowlers. I left feeling that my hat collection verged on boring so I am all set to start elaborating on what I've got with feathers, flowers, lace, netting... May the fun begin!
